How to Write a Grow Light Spectrum Customization Brief

An OEM grow-light spectrum brief checklist for defining crop goals, fixture platform, spectrum evidence, controls, and approval documents.

A grow-light spectrum customization brief should define the crop objective, target spectrum evidence, fixture platform, control method, and approval documents before an OEM sample is built. It should not promise yield, energy savings, flowering response, certification, or customer results unless those claims are backed by project-specific evidence. For a commercial buyer, the practical question is narrower: what must the supplier know before changing LEDs, optics, controls, labels, or documentation?

Number's current Sanity product records support spectrum customization on several platforms, but the verified fields are model-specific. The LED TB600 greenhouse toplight record lists Spectrum, Power, Size, Logo, Color, Cable Length, Dimming, and Mounting as customizable options. Its verified product fields include 600 W +/-5% power consumption, 2100 micromoles per second PPF, 3.5 micromoles per joule efficacy, AC 200-480 V input, 0-10 V dimming, and Full Spectrum for greenhouse. The LED JT720F record lists Spectrum, Logo, and Color as customizable options, with 720 W power, 1950 micromoles per second PPF, 2.7 micromoles per joule efficacy, AC 220-240 V input, and Knob & 0-10 V dimming. Treat those as current product-record facts, not as a promise that every private-label version will share the same specification after customization.

Start With The Use Case, Not The LED Recipe

The brief should begin with the growing environment and decision stage: greenhouse toplight retrofit, indoor flower room, nursery rack, research chamber, or private-label product line. Then state whether the request is for supplemental intensity, photoperiod management, visual inspection, brand differentiation, or compatibility with an existing controller. Purdue Extension notes that LED technology can target specific wavelengths and adjust red to far-red ratios for plant responses, while also making clear that the best combinations depend on the plant and objective. That is why a B2B spectrum brief should describe the desired evaluation method instead of asking for a generic red-blue mix.

Include A Baseline Fixture Platform

Choose the mechanical and electrical platform before asking for a spectrum change. For a greenhouse toplight project, TB600 is a reasonable discussion platform when the buyer needs a high-efficacy greenhouse fixture record with wide input voltage and 0-10 V dimming. For an indoor foldable-fixture project, JT720F is a more relevant platform when the buyer needs a foldable 720 W fixture record and standard dimming options. If the private-label target changes power, input voltage, driver, enclosure, cable, or control method, ask Number to confirm which original fields still apply and which fields need a revised datasheet or sample test.

Ask For Spectrum Evidence In A Reviewable Format

A useful brief asks for the evidence file format before the sample is built. At minimum, request the target spectrum chart or spectral quantum distribution, PPF, PPE, input power, dimming behavior, and test condition used for the sample record. The DesignLights Consortium horticultural technical requirements use PPF, PPE, and spectral reporting as part of fixture qualification context; a buyer can use that same discipline for an OEM approval file without claiming the customized sample is listed or certified.

Use this wording in the RFQ: provide the proposed spectrum target, expected PPF and PPE range, driver and dimming method, thermal assumptions, and the document that will be updated after sample testing. Do not accept a color name such as white, full spectrum, flower, or veg as the only spectrum requirement. Color names are useful shorthand, but they are not enough for procurement, QA, or repeat production.

Separate Crop Hypotheses From Product Claims

The brief can include a crop hypothesis, but it should label that hypothesis clearly. For example: the project wants to test whether a modified red, blue, and far-red balance supports the buyer's crop schedule. That is not the same as saying the fixture will increase yield or shorten production time. Any claim about yield, quality, morphology, flowering, or savings needs its own trial plan, baseline, measurement period, and acceptance criteria.

Define The Sample Approval Checklist

Before mass production, ask for a one-page approval sheet that compares the standard product record, the customized sample, and the final purchase specification. Include these fields:

  • Product platform and Sanity product ID used as the starting record.
  • Custom spectrum target, spectrum evidence file, and test date.
  • PPF, PPE, input power, input voltage, dimming method, thermal management, operating temperature, and warranty language that will appear in the buyer file.
  • Which labels, carton artwork, datasheet fields, and installation documents must change for the OEM version.
  • Who approves deviations if the measured sample differs from the requested spectrum or output range.

When To Send The Brief To Number

Send the brief before quotation finalization if spectrum, power, driver, dimming, cable, label, enclosure, or mounting changes are part of the order.
